Many devices of modern life have mechanical components, including automobiles, aircraft, dishwashers and lawnmowers. Mechanical engineers can be employed in many industries from aerospace to energy production. They work primarily from offices when creating plans but may visit manufacturing facilities or worksites to consult with production personnel. Their salaries depend on their degrees and gender.

Salaries

Mechanical engineers with bachelor’s degrees earned a median annual salary of $80, 000, with the 25th percentile making $59, 000 and the 75th percentile receiving $105, 000, a difference of $46, 000. This was according to a salary survey of degrees and salaries conducted by Georgetown University in 2011. These amounts were lower than the median earnings of all engineering graduates, which was an annual $75, 000, with a range of $53, 000 to $102, 000. They were also less than half the salary of the highest-paying engineering degree, petroleum engineering, which earned a median annual $120, 000.

Comparison

Compare the undergraduate degree salaries with the averages for all mechanical engineers, which ran $83, 550 per year as of May 2011, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The lowest-earning 10 percent received $51, 340 yearly, while the best-paid 10 percent earned a mean $119, 950 annually. These amounts applied to all mechanical engineers, with a minimum bachelor’s degree, but also having up to a Ph.D., which is a necessary qualification for those wanting research positions. The biggest employers of mechanical engineers were architectural and engineering services, which offered means of $89, 500 per year. The best-paying employers were what the BLS classified as lessors of real estate, who paid a mean $119, 380 annually.

Compare this with the median $80, 000 made by male graduates. These figures compare to the 16 percent of all engineering majors who were female and whose median earnings were $62, 000 per year. Males received a median $79, 000 annually. The engineering major with the highest yearly wages for females was chemical engineering at a median $72, 000. The 72 percent of graduates who were male received a median $92, 000 annually.
