As a, you would perform entry-level professional engineering activities within a particular specialty. Your program area assignment would reflect your specialty and the needs of the hiring agency. Program areas include, but are not limited to: planning, design, construction, and operation of highways, bridges, airports, railroads, ports and transportation-related areas: planning and design of parks and facilities; environmental exposure investigations; electrical design, public utilities regulation, review engineering reports and architectural designs for proposed condominiums/cooperatives, and building mechanical installations.

In most agencies, in order to successfully pass the one-year probationary period, Junior Engineers appointed from this eligible list will be required to obtain a Fundamentals in Engineering Certificate during their first year of service. Upon receipt of this certification and successful completion of one year of State service, you may be advanced to the Grade 20 level of the engineering series with a starting salary of $53, 037 without further testing. In some agencies, Junior Engineers who fail to obtain their Fundamentals in Engineering Certificate during the first year may be offered an opportunity to transfer to a para-professional engineering position pending completion of this requirement.
