Mechanical engineers conceive and design mechanical devices ranging from simple objects such as flashlights to complex structures such as aircraft. Businesses such as real-estate developers and manufacturers work with engineering consultants on specific projects to gain professional input on complex engineering challenges. Mechanical engineers with a professional engineer license and extensive experience can choose to open their own consulting service businesses rather than working for an established employer.

Step 1

Obtain a professional engineering license. Each state places responsibility for engineering licensure on a different agency, and imposes different requirements for applicants' education and experience. The Texas Board of Professional Engineers, for example, requires applicants to have between four and eight years of professional experience, depending on which degree program they graduated from, and charges $250 for the licensing exam as of 2011.

Step 2

Fulfill the registration requirements for your chosen type of business organization in your state. Consider registering your consultancy as an LLC - LLCs provide an extra layer of legal liability protection, which can be useful for consultants who provide advice that can directly affect the income or obligations of clients. Draft and file articles of organization with the Secretary of State's office in your state to register an LLC.

Step 3

Set up a small office space to meet with clients. Look for an office that is not too large: an area to do your work privately and a room to host clients is all you will need in the beginning. Make sure your client room is set up to allow you to make presentations from a laptop computer on a large screen. Consider using tablet projector technology to allow you and your clients to write on presentation materials such as blueprints and sketches in real time.

Consider renting temporary office space from a company like Regus or Corporate Office Centers to keep costs low in the beginning. These companies can provide you with a fully equipped conference room whenever you need it, charging by the hour and allowing you to perform the independent parts of your work in your home office.

Step 4

Market your services to businesses, government entities and nonprofit organizations in your area. Use a list of professional contacts you have made throughout your career to jump start your prospecting efforts. Always ask for personal referrals after each time you complete a project to stimulate word-of-mouth advertising and gain credibility among potential clients. Professional networking and word-of-mouth advertising is the key to success as a consultant - most organizational leaders will want to work with someone recommended by a trusted colleague.

It depends on what position you are hired for...
Tata Consultancy Service a.k.a TCS is a IT/ITES corporate.... so no matter what your engineering degree is... you'll be trained on Software Development or the specifics of actual position you are hired for..
And be sure you're not going to use your Mechanical Engineer knowledge on the Job. :-)
