All of our MSc courses last one calendar year, comprising two terms of taught examinable material followed by a research dissertation.

The courses share a core of topics covering fundamental and applied soil mechanics. Three compulsory field courses are also organised, in Kent, the Bristol area, and Southern Europe.

The MSc in Soil Mechanics and Engineering Seismology is concerned with the solution of engineering problems connected with the study of seismic ground movements, their effect on foundations and building materials and engineering structures. Course-specific modules are as follows:

  • Basic dynamics and analysis of strong motion data
  • Earthquake geotechnical engineering
  • Engineering seismology

The MSc in Soil Mechanics and Environmental Geotechnics meets the growing need for advanced specialist geo-environmental education, including a grounding in the relevant topics in chemistry and biology. Course-specific modules are as follows:

  • Contaminated land and groundwater
  • Landfill engineering

MSc course add-on modules

This MSc course offers the add-on modules of business management and sustainable development. Each of these options comprise 120 hours of study and are taken as an alternative to a corresponding amount of engineering study.

Business management

This module equips you with the skills needed to work in competitive business environments in the civil engineering industry. It is suitable for those who wish to combine a technical competence in their chosen field with a grasp of the principles of business management.

The module is designed to complement core material in the MSc courses. The course is divided into four units.

Sustainable development

This module provides you with the skills to incorporate the concepts of sustainable development into all the stages of an engineering project’s development. It is suitable for those who wish to direct their career towards issues of development and redevelopment, especially in the provision of infrastructure, and its renovation and renewal.

You will gain the practical tools necessary to apply the principles of engineering for sustainable development in real world contexts. The course comprises three units.

Part-time study

All of our MSc courses are also offered on a part-time basis by Term Release.

The term release option normally involves attendance in the autumn term of one year and the spring term of a second year.

What is soil sampling in civil engineering.

From my understanding soil samples are taken to consider the possible ways a foundation of a building will be layed. That sort of thing. Hope this helps.
