About Mechanical Engineering courses

The normal entry requirements for all our courses are at least three suitable subjects at A-level.

We require A*AAA or A*A*A overall, to include:

  • A* in Mathematics
  • A*/A in Physics
  • A in one or two of the following: Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Design Technology, Economics, Electronics, Further Mathematics, Art and Design (4th A-Level only), French or German (H304 Mechanical Engineering with a Year Abroad only).

International Baccalaureate

For students following the International Baccalaureate, we require an overall score of 40 points, including 6 in Mathematics and Physics at Higher level. We require a third relevant subject at Higher level 6, taken from Chemistry, Design Technology, Biology, Computer Science and Economics.

Other qualifications

We accept a wide range of other qualifications with popular examples listed below. The levels of achievement indicated are based on conditional offers made in previous years. Conditional offers may vary.

  • Scottish Advanced Highers: AAA to include Maths, Physics and third relevant subject.
  • Irish Leaving Certificate:A1A1AAAA, with A1 in Maths and Physics
  • Cambridge Pre-U: as for A-Levels with D2 for A* and D3 for A in principal subjects.
  • European Baccalaureate: 85% overall with 90% in Maths and 85% in Physics and further relevant subject.
  • French Baccalaureate: 16 points overall with 16 in Maths and Physics.
  • German Arbitur: 1.4 overall with 14 in Maths and Physics.
  • Spanish Titulo de Bachiller: 8.5 overall with 9 in Maths and Physics.
  • Advanced Placement Tests: 3 subjects at grade 5, including Calculus BC and two further relevant subjects to include Physics B or Physics C: Mechanics.
  • India: ISC/CBSE with 95% in Maths, 90% in Physics, and 90% in a further core subject and 90% overall across five class XII subjects. Additionally the department may require a JEE score.
  • Singapore Integrated Programme: 3 relevant subjects at H2 including Maths and Physics.
  • Singapore Polytechnic Diploma: will be considered for 1st year entry if awarded the diploma with a GPA of 3.8+.

We do not accept applicants from Foundation or Access Courses, or applicants with BTEC National Certificate, BTEC Higher National Diploma, or GNVQ qualifications.

We do not accept direct entrants to the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of our courses.

English language requirements (all candidates)

All candidates must demonstrate a minimum level of English language proficiency for admission to the College.
