Learning outcomes

Provide in-depth knowledge on fundamental and applied thermodynamics and a firm grasp, clear understanding of basic priciples of work and energy conversion as well as their applications in advanced themodynamic cycles.

Course main content

Basic concepts and definitions. Reviews of the first, second and third laws of thermodynamics. Availability functions, availability analysis and thermodynamic relations. Ideal and non-ideal mixtures and their thermodynamic properties. Chemical reactions, combustion and fuel cells. Chemical and multiphase equilibria. Overview of statistical themodynamcs and electromagnetism. Review of advanced thermodynamic cycles. In depth study of combined cycles, Kalina cycle, STIG, HAT, CHAT, externally fired and closes cycles. Fundamentals of CFBC, PFBC IGCC and chemical recuperated cycles. Discussion on compression and absorption cycles and working fluids. Overview of single and multi-effect cycles. Applcations of Ammonia/Water and Water/Lithium Bromide systems.
